WASHINGTON – Rayful Edmond, a notorious figure tied to Washington, D.C.’s crack cocaine epidemic, has died at the age of 60, officials confirmed.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons reported that Edmond passed away on Tuesday while working out in a gym. In late July, he was moved from prison to a halfway house in Nashville. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been revealed.

Who was Rayful Edmond?

Rayful Edmond was a well-known drug lord who dominated Washington, D.C.’s narcotics scene during the 1980s. At 24, he was arrested and later convicted in federal court, receiving a life sentence in 1990. His role in spreading crack cocaine contributed to the city’s grim reputation as the “Murder Capital of the U.S.” during that time.

Previous Developments: Edmond’s transfer to a Nashville halfway house was confirmed on July 31. The Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that his community confinement was managed by its Nashville Residential Reentry Management Office.

Edmond was found guilty of leading a vast criminal network that employed around 150 individuals, generated $300 million annually, and was linked to over 30 killings.

While incarcerated, he faced an additional 30-year sentence for orchestrating large-scale drug operations from his prison cell in Pennsylvania.

After spending more than 30 years behind bars, Edmond successfully appealed for his release. At the end of July, he was transferred to community confinement in Tennessee following his release from federal prison.
