Birmingham Mass Shooting Leaves Four Dead and 21 Injured
Birmingham, Al – At least four people were killed and 21 injured in a Birmingham mass shooting that occurred Saturday night in Birmingham’s Five Points South Entertainment District. Multiple shooters targeted an individual, resulting in bystanders being caught in the crossfire, according to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond.
The Birmingham mass shooting unfolded around 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South. Officers found two men and one woman unresponsive outside the venue, all of whom were declared dead at the scene by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Department. A fourth victim later succumbed to injuries at the University of Alabama Hospital. The conditions of the injured vary from non-life-threatening to critical.
Thurmond reported that the assailants initially fired from a vehicle before exiting and continuing their attack, leaving over 100 shell casings behind. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin indicated that the weapons involved may have been illegally modified to fire automatically using devices known as “switches,” which convert semi-automatic handguns into automatic weapons. These devices are prohibited by federal law, and attempts to reinforce this ban at the state level have not succeeded.
Woodfin emphasized the challenges posed by Alabama’s permitless carry law and called for enhanced funding for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to better enforce gun regulations to prevent situations like this Birmingham mass shooting. “We need the necessary tools,” he stated, expressing the need for collaboration with state officials to address these issues.
In response to the tragedy, Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Selma, issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims’ families and calling for action against gun violence. “This senseless violence is unacceptable and it must stop,” she said, urging elected officials to work across all levels of government to enhance community safety and reduce the presence of dangerous weapons on the streets.
